“Your Suffering is Beautiful” | Nietzsche’s Birth of Tragedy
Though many philosophers throughout history have talked about beauty and suffering, very few have done this to the same extent as Friedrich Nietzsche. In his book The Birth of Tragedy he explores how the sufferings and pains of life can be rendered beautiful through art, and this ties in interestingly with his wider philosophy. So let's see what this great thinker can teach us about the life of art and the art of life.

When it comes to 19th century philosophy, and especially 19th century existentialism, two names are never far from the conversation. The Most Terrifying Story Ever Written | I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream

There are many post-apocalyptic tales. Some are hopeful, some are hopeless, some are funny, and some are tragic. But few are as bleak as Harlan Ellison's I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. A terrifying warning about AI, Existential Terror, Hatred, and More, Ellison's story remains one of the greatest post-apocalyptic tales of all time. And is, perhaps, the most disturbing story ever written. Su...

Does Society Need God?
Переглядів 62 тис.21 день тому
What do we do about God? The question of the day for many people, even many atheists, is whether religion should be maintained for the good of everyone, even if we think its tenets are, ultimately, false. An argument for religion's necessity has been put forward by many recent voices like Jordan Peterson, and at points has even been touched upon by hardline atheist Richard Dawkins. But today we...
Dostoevsky's Radical Philosophy of Love

Dostoevsky is considered a great thinker on many topics. His ideas about God, Theology, Morality, and Social Reform are famous throughout the world. Because all at once his ideas on love are hopeful, optimistic, demanding, and terrifying. And I am excited to look at ...

wow i can see that franco took machiavellis advice...he didnt "look good" but was good and didnt forgive at the start those who wanted to destroy spain. Even in his deathbed thats what he was most worried about. The traitors destroying all he had built and all those years of hard work and reconstruction...Which by looking at the current state of affairs and the "lookgoodism" of our current govement and its policies (lettingthousands of criminals into the country without any documentation when if you go to africa and u dont have ID you get shot at border patrols) and giving away free money and healthcare to people that have not contributed for the system at all...Its all a spiral into madness that he covered us from and that we didnt listen to...

For me, "Metamorphosis" is a reflection on changed circumstances and perception of us by the others and how much our personality and inner intimate being is shaped by the external conditions and people around us. It is a story of a young and beautiful getting old and ugly, it is a story of a strong and healthy becoming crippled one day told through a fictional narrative.

11:51 I think that it isn't too hard to have someone on board with those premises and as an idealist I think it is at least conceivable that moral values might be grounded in some metaphysical way so it seems less of a noble lie than a noble guess... problem is, if all you think is plausible is "metaphysical ordering of values" you get nothing specific and are no closer to knowing what those values could be, actually. But at least you can cast doubt on moral nihilism and thus, I suppose, sway people to behave more nicely. Then people might discuss the specifics and hopefully agree on something which gets us some of the way towards the universalized "ideal", even if lacking a classically conceived afterlife.

Does Satan ever suggest how he would act differently / change the universe if he were to usurp the position of God? Would he not have the knowledge that no matter what he does he is serving God's will in playing the role of his counterpart? In which case he could only truly rebel via complete inaction.

True or false is not the point. The point is that the wrong values will lead us straight into hell and the right ones to paradise. Perhaps that is hyperbole; perhaps it is not true in every instance, but it is undeniably true enough often enough that even an Atheist ought to take notice. Asserting that values are arbitrary is like claiming that the government can just print more money and make us all millionaires---technically true and disastrously misguided. Facts, truth, knowledge, and all of our sophisticated technology, are not enough ensure our continued prosperity. "Man cannot live by bread alone." Matthew 4:4.

Here's a thought - AM, in this story, is the ultimate expression of heartless authority, and the depiction of the Ted's loss of everything that ever made his existence valuable to the whims of AM, IMO, makes this a cautionary, anti-authoritarian tale. That is certainly my interpretation, as hatred and enforced control to me are usually linked, whether people want to admit it or not.
